Welcome to Urban Farming HQ! I’m Anthony Antonicello and I’m so grateful that you’re here.
Urban Farming Headquarters is your hub for all of your urban agriculture needs. Whether you are currently looking into urban gardening as a hobby, or want to start a new self sustainable lifestyle, we are your number one place for all of your urban farming needs.
We invite you join in, as our family has, to live a self sustainable life and grow your own healthy and delicious food. My name is Anthony Antonicello. My wife, Alyssa and I have been living self sustainably through urban farming since 2012. This blog is our effort to share the joys and fruits of our labor in which we have reaped with you.
We do not live on a farm, and as much as we would like to have 30+ acres, the reality is that it is not very feasible in todays world. With urban farming you do not need to live on a farm, honestly you do not even need a back yard, all you need is to know how to grow vegetables and fruit and with a little bit of space you will be able to start your journey in urban agriculture.
Why Urban Farming?
There are many benefits of urban agriculture that we have had the pleasure to enjoy and we would love for you and your family to do so as well. If you have ever heard the popular TED Talk with Ron Finley one of the amazing things about growing your own food is the money you will save. Ron says that “growing your own food is like printing your own money,” and it is absolutely true.
Another amazing benefit of urban agriculture is the health benefits. My wife and I like to live very healthfully. We eat “paleo” so the majority of the food we eat are vegetables, vegetables, and oh yea, fruit too! Growing our own food has not only help us to live more like our primal ancestors, but also we have a greater appreciation for the food that we eat.
Did you know that tomatoes do not grow in January? I always wondered how the grocery stores could have all vegetables at any given point throughout the year. Well, the truth is that the things that they do to those vegetables in order for you to have them off-season are far greater than just “unappealing.”
As of 2015, Alyssa and I grow fruits and vegetables year round. We live in a 2 bedroom house, on less than an acre right outside of the metro-city area of Lexington, KY. Our family consists of 2 children, a boxer-greyhound mix named Moose, and a chihuahua mix named Beans. Alyssa is a full-time doctoral student in the Physical Therapy program at the University of Kentucky, I work a full-time job and am working toward a MBA.
Our “farm-family” consists of 5 chickens, 2 ducks, and a rooster, in addition to our fruits and veggies of course. We handle all of this with very little space, and very little free time, and are confident that you can too.
Start Sustainable Farming with Your Own Urban Garden
At Urban Farming HQ, we believe that urban agriculture is the best way to become one with your environment and to become more responsible with your health and happiness.
Entire communities can be transformed with urban farming. All they need is a little hope, and a bit of guidance and they can begin to grow.
As the old proverb suggests, “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.”
Our mission is to empower you to start living more sustainably. Growing your own fruits and vegetables. Producing your own eggs and farming your own meat if you want to! Living a healthier life and becoming one with your environment.
We’ll teach you urban gardening, how to raise backyard chickens and livestock, sustainable farming, biodynamic farming, vertical farming and more that will help you and your family become urban farmers.
We will also bring you amazing healthy recipes, awesome ways to shop and eat locally and how to support your local economy.
There are a lot of resources available online about how to garden or how to eat healthy, however all of the website we’ve come across are not very user-friendly. Sometimes, you don’t even know where to begin and those other sites can leave you more confused than when you arrived.
Our goal is to make things as streamlined and as easy as possible for you to follow. We want to walk you through the entire process so you can focus on spending more time with your family, not adding another tedious chore.
So, if you’ve ever asked yourself “what is urban farming,” or “how to start a vegetable garden,” or “What are the advantages of organic gardening,” or just simply “What do I do next?,” then you’ve come to the right place!
